share a memory with us

Plaque at Whitestone Branch of the Library.... Books were Alana's first and most enduring love... even before she could read... as a toddler, she would follow us around waving books at us so we would read them. She was a fixture in Barnes & Noble and in several branches of the Public Library.

Upon return of the USTS Empire State the Cadets "spelled" out RIP ALANA AND JOE in flags on the Stern of the ship. The year before, they had spent most of their free time there during the summer sea term....
they took the flags down before I could get a shot of all the flags...

This Iris was a special plant to Alana.. the summer she worked at NSDC for her Ag School Credit, she found this plant and was so excited she dug it up, brought it home and nurtured it. It bloomed once during the years she tended it. This year however, it bloomed beautifully, She would have be so happy to see it....

Joe worked in the library at Maritime for a few years, and last summer, would stay in the library studying while Alana had class. This globe was dedicated to him.

In Ft Schuyler , In front of the Chapel is a beautiful garden that was planted in memory of Alana and Joe.... ....

by Adrienne Bromwell

A part of me
Died with you
It was that part
That woke up at
2AM to a news article
On the internet
(damn technology)
More than that
It was a high school
Identity crisis
(I no longer have a doppelganger)
It was a doubt in the
Existence of a higher power
(God needed you I know)
It was a pity for myself
(I'm alive)
It was the part of me
That failed
To follow my dreams
and
Reach my highest potential
(I'm alive)
It was the part of me that
Was simply afraid of the unknown
(you can't avoid the unknown)
You have not passed in vain
You took
The gangrened
Pieces of my
Soul
With you
You took

in memory of Alana

away message from Ryan, friend and fellow Maritime Cadet

I am dedicating this page in remembrance to two outstanding people.... friends of mine and many others out there in this world. These two friends seemingly were taken before their time, leaving us only with amazing memories and pictures. Now people cry and mourn the early departure of two caring souls... two people who were so in love with each other it was contagious to other couples... people could go to these two for any kind of help or advice, or even for just a good laugh. Many of us will remember many times of humor spent around these two amazing souls... and it will be these memories that will allow us still on earth to carry on with our lives, to allow us to lead maybe better lives. So with that, I would like to say rest in peace Joseph Cheetham and Alana Berenson... and save me a place for me many years from now up there.

RIP 8/11/04
Joseph Cheetham
Alana Berenson
may you both keep your love alive in heaven as it was here on this planet...
 we miss you unbelievably

    The story is there.

I'm not okay, but I think I will be.

Feel free to comment, but please don't tell me how sorry you are, because I don't think I can handle that...

Just give me love, or whatever.

People who knew her, comment to her last live journal post.

Thanks.

This is Kinda how I think she might feel right now.

I'm standing on a bridge
I'm waiting in the dark
I thought that you'd be here by now
There's nothing but the rain
No footsteps on the ground
I'm listening but there's no sound

Isn't anyone trying to find me?
Won't somebody come take me home
It's a damn cold night
Trying to figure out this life
Won't you take me by the hand
Take me somewhere new
I don't know who you are
But I, I'm with you I'm with you

I'm looking for a place
Searching for a face
Is anybody here I know
'Cause nothing's going right
And everythings a mess
And no one likes to be alone

t

The streets we walked down, all empty and void of cars
The pictures of you smiling, all hollowed out
You said no tears, none you couldn't wipe a way
I sit at the places you always took me
A Cup of coffee black like we always had
A little more bitter, harder to swallow.
I walk past our room, praying you were inside
All the nights we spent talking about the future
A future that we must carry on with our ambitions to fulfill
Our walk through Europe, stopping in Rome for you
You say no more tears, but please understand
These tears, running down our faces, pooling on the floor
This room full of tears, tears full of love
Are all for you both
And though there is sadness mixed in
There is happiness for the lives that you led
The joy that you will spend the rest of eternity with the loves that you have found
They say your lives were just beginning
I disagree
You did so much more with the short time that we had you
Then most could dream of in 60 years
So fly off into the stars, but come back to visit
Our last cup will always be waiting.

Eulogy Poem from Analeise Marshall

Alana-an angel before her time

Look at pictures of her smiling face
Takes you to a time no pain can erase
A sudden loss, an angel too early made
The ultimate price her Family and friends paid
What about death makes you want to put it into a box.
All of her toys, cloths, books, furniture, even her socks.
But she doesn't live inside her things not inside her empty room
Not inside the silk lined coffin not even inside her final resting tomb
She lives in al the ones she loved all the people she left behind her
All the family, friends, loved ones that is where you will find her
In every smile, every twinkle of the eye
Every bit of laughter, blown giggle, or a little bit shy
In every new baby, in every new breath, the light of her heart will shine
In her own special way she will make sure everyone and everything she touched is "fine"
Things don't move the way we plan, stars don't always align
But everything has its rightful place in its rightful time
Some flowers die before they wither, others before they wilt
Still young and beautiful they are torn down without any guilt
Some fires merely flicker out and some quickly get stomped down
Some fires suffocate, while some just slowly drown
Some souls die alone
A loving friend never known
Alana's soul made friends with all
A friend on which you could always call
She was real and true and always herself
Everyone who loved her knew of Alana's Wealth

poem by Shari Rubenstein

Alana Berenson was one of my closest friends throughout our Australian trip in the summer of 2001. In fact, I even had a little crush on her. If I wasn't so shy, I would have made a move, but even so, I'm glad we were able to stay friends when we got back. When she came to my New Year's party this year, I was ready to make that move. Alas, she had found a boyfriend whom she met at school, but he was a great guy according to Alana, and I was happy to see her happy. She was one of the most interesting, carefree, and outgoing people I have ever met, totally typifing the "I don't care what you think of me" attitude yet doing it with a smile. I'm heartbroken to see her gone from us, but I'm glad I at least had the chance to get to know her. Alana, I'll always remember you and I'll keep you in my prayers, I know I will never meet another person like you.
